This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. In this course, you’ll gain hands-on experience with Blender, one of the most powerful and widely used 3D modeling tools. Starting with the basics, you'll learn to navigate the interface and understand fundamental 3D concepts like modeling and texturing. By the end, you'll have built a robust 3D model that showcases your newly acquired skills. The course begins by teaching you the basics of Blender, followed by practical exercises on references and gray boxes to help you set up your first models. As you progress, you’ll dive into important concepts like UV mapping, mesh editing techniques, and optimization. Each section builds on the last, adding complexity with advanced mesh techniques, working with materials and shaders, and refining textures to improve your models’ realism. You’ll also explore important workflow improvements, including scene optimization and asset management to streamline your work in Blender. Practical lessons teach you how to create structural elements like bolts, supports, and roof structures, adding realism to your designs while fine-tuning the materials and shaders you’ve created. This course is perfect for beginners with an interest in 3D modeling, animation, or game design. No prior experience with Blender is required, and the course provides a hands-on approach with plenty of practice, perfect for anyone looking to start creating 3D models from scratch.

Syllabus

  • Introduction
    • In this module, we will introduce you to the foundational concepts and tools you’ll need to move 3D models from Blender to Unreal Engine 5. We will cover the initial steps for setting up your environment and help you understand the core differences between the two platforms.
  • Getting Started and References + [DOWNLOAD PACK]
    • In this module, we will guide you through the basics of Blender, ensuring you're comfortable with the essential tools and interface. Additionally, we'll introduce the concept of using reference images to streamline your modeling process. A helpful download pack will also be provided for practical exercises.
  • Grey Boxes and Collections
    • In this module, we will teach you how to create grey boxes as placeholders for larger scene elements, allowing you to focus on layout and scale. Additionally, we'll cover how to effectively use collections in Blender to keep your project organized and manageable throughout the modeling process.
  • Seams, Sharps, and UV Mapping
    • In this module, we will cover how to properly set seams and sharps to ensure clean, efficient UV mapping. You'll also gain an introduction to UV unwrapping, a key skill in preparing your models for texturing in both Blender and Unreal Engine 5.
  • Optimization and Asset Management
    • In this module, we will explore methods to optimize your scenes, ensuring they run smoothly in both Blender and Unreal Engine 5. Additionally, we'll introduce the Blender Asset Manager, helping you stay organized and maintain an efficient asset workflow throughout your projects.
  • Materials and Shaders
    • In this module, we will introduce you to materials and texture mapping in Blender, showing you how to apply your first materials to 3D models. You will also learn how to create unique shaders, elevating the realism and visual appeal of your assets for Unreal Engine 5.
  • Mesh Editing Techniques
    • In this module, we will dive into advanced mesh editing techniques, such as proportional editing, mirror modifiers, and Boolean operations, to enhance your modeling workflow. You’ll also learn how to create a strong base mesh and efficiently link object data for streamlined asset creation.
  • Advanced Mesh Techniques
    • In this module, we will explore advanced mesh techniques, including working with subdivision surfaces and optimizing meshes for performance. You'll also learn how to enhance realism in your models, understand normals, and fine-tune shaders for a more polished look, preparing your assets for Unreal Engine 5.
  • Refining and Texturing
    • In this module, we will focus on refining your models by cleaning up meshes and applying metallic shaders for realism. You'll also gain practical skills in modeling and texturing specific elements like pipe joints and door handles, ensuring that your assets are both efficient and visually striking.
  • Structural Elements
    • In this module, we will cover the creation of realistic structural elements such as supports and roof structures. You'll also learn techniques to accelerate your workflow and add intricate details, like bolts, to improve the realism and precision of your architectural models.
