Syllabus

  • Electrical Drives and Cyber Physical Systems
    • This module Electrical Drives and Control introduces the components and control techniques that enable motion and actuation in modern manufacturing systems. The module covers sensors and actuators, explaining how sensors collect real-time data and actuators convert electrical signals into physical motion. Learners explore the control of solenoid valves using microcontrollers in pneumatic and hydraulic systems for precise force and motion control. The module introduces the Arduino Nano platform and its use in controlling actuators, particularly servo motors for robotic applications. Practical exercises include interfacing a servo motor with Arduino Nano, controlling it using a potentiometer, and managing multiple servo motors through the PCA9685 controller. The module concludes with the assembly and testing of a 5-degree-of-freedom (5 DOF) robotic arm, integrating sensors, actuators, and control logic into a complete robotic system. Overall, it provides the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills required for electrical drives, motion control, and robotic automation.
  • New Age Manufacturing Concepts
    • This module New Age Manufacturing Concepts explores the evolution of traditional manufacturing into intelligent, automated, and flexible production systems. The module covers Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP), and Material Requirements Planning (MRP) for integrating and optimizing production activities. Learners study Group Technology, Cellular Manufacturing, and lean manufacturing, along with the role of robotics in improving efficiency and reducing waste. The module introduces applications such as reverse engineering, mechatronics system design, expert systems, and cognitive manufacturing for intelligent decision-making. It also covers embedded systems, microcontrollers, fuzzy logic, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for real-time control and automation. A case study on embedded systems in manufacturing machinery and discussions on entrepreneurial opportunities in robotic manufacturing provide practical and business perspectives. Overall, the module prepares learners to understand and innovate in Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing environments.
