Learn about the key physical, cognitive, and social changes that occur during middle childhood, a period of growing independence between ages six and twelve. This course explores how advancements in thinking and problem-solving are influenced by school, family, and peer relationships, while also considering how children's sense of self and personalities evolve. By the end of this course, you will be able to analyze the key aspects of development during these years and identify the factors that help children succeed.

  • Middle Childhood
    • In this course, you’ll learn about the changes that happen to children between ages 6 and 12, a time when they’re growing, learning, and becoming more independent. We’ll start by looking at physical development - how children’s bodies change and mature during these years. You’ll also explore how their thinking and problem-solving skills advance, and learn about common learning disabilities and other factors that can affect their education. Next, we’ll dive into theories about social and personal development, including how children’s personalities and self-concepts evolve. You’ll see how relationships with family and friends change, and how other influences - like school, media, and community - play a role in shaping who they are. By the end of this course, you’ll understand the key aspects of development during middle childhood and what helps children succeed during these important years.
