Insurance and Billing, and Coding Essentials is a comprehensive course with insight and focus on the role of the Insurance Billing Specialist. The course provides foundational knowledge required of an administrative allied healthcare professional. Emphasis is placed on the revenue cycle and basic insurance terminology. In this course, students are exposed to a variety of eLearning elements that allow hands-on interaction with the screen for an engaging education. In addition to video-based instruction that provides foundational knowledge, a variety of other learning methods are utilized for engagement, entertainment, and inspiration throughout training. These may include interactive skill activities, game-based learning, and an immersive environment for critical thinking skills.

Syllabus

Foundations of Medical Insurance
- In this module, you’ll explore the foundations of medical insurance and the role of the insurance specialist. You’ll learn about healthcare benefits, insurance and managed care plans, and key insurance terminology. You’ll also examine the phases of the revenue cycle, related tasks, and career and certification opportunities in the field.
Health Information, Privacy, and Compliance
- In this module, you’ll explore how health information is documented, used, and protected. You’ll learn about electronic health records, protected health information, and different types of patient consent. You’ll also examine HIPAA, HITECH, and other laws and regulations that guide confidentiality, privacy, security, and compliant healthcare practices.
Patient Encounters and Financial Responsibility
- In this module, you’ll examine key administrative and financial processes involved in the patient encounter. You’ll learn how patient and insurance information is collected, verified, and used to establish financial responsibility. You’ll also explore eligibility, assignment of benefits, time-of-service payments, advance beneficiary notices, and rules that affect insurance coverage.
Introduction to Medical Coding Systems
- In this module, you’ll be introduced to the major coding systems used in medical billing and coding: ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS. You’ll explore the purpose, organization, and key components of each code set and the organizations responsible for maintaining them. You’ll also learn how to navigate their indexes, sections, categories, and other coding resources and distinguish between the different code systems.
