Lean Six Sigma has a reputation for belts, tools, and jargon, which obscures a fairly simple proposition. Find out what the customer values, look at what the process does, gather data rather than opinions, find the real cause rather than the obvious one, remove what adds no value, and make the improvement stick. Every tool in the method exists to serve one of those six steps. In Lean Six Sigma For Dummies, four thematic modules and eight focused lessons take you through those steps. You will start by defining Lean Six Sigma and its underlying principles, then identify your process customers and understand what they genuinely need rather than what you assume. You will move into understanding the process itself and managing the people and change around it, then gather and present data so it informs a decision rather than decorating a slide. From there you will identify root causes, find the non-value-adding steps and waste, get the process to flow, and generate solutions by thinking differently. The course closes on prevention, Design for Six Sigma, design thinking, agile, and deployment, covering rapid improvement events, DMAIC, everyday operational excellence, project selection, and the checklists that support a project. Each lesson opens with two five-minute topic videos followed immediately by applied practice, and every module closes with a hands-on lab, a roleplay, a discussion prompt, and a graded assessment, so nothing stays theoretical for long. Whether you are running your first improvement project, supporting one, or leading a deployment that has stalled, this Lean Six Sigma course gives you the method, the tools, and the worked scenarios that turn improvement from an initiative into a habit. By the end, you will be able to define a project properly, gather data that settles an argument, find a genuine root cause, and design a change that holds.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to the Entire Course
    • Provides a starting-point assessment that helps learners understand their current readiness across the Lean Six Sigma capabilities developed throughout the course. It evaluates understanding of Lean and Six Sigma principles, customer requirements, process mapping and data collection, root cause analysis and waste identification, and experience with DMAIC projects and deployment. Results generate a personalized readiness profile and recommended learning path without restricting access to any module.
  • Principles and Customer Requirements
    • Establishes the foundations of Lean Six Sigma and its customer-focused approach to improvement. Learners examine what Lean and Six Sigma each contribute, why they are used together, and the principles that guide effective improvement work. They then identify internal and external process customers, gather the voice of the customer, distinguish needs from proposed solutions, and translate customer needs into measurable requirements.
  • Understanding the Process and the Data
    • Develops the ability to understand processes as they actually operate and use reliable data to guide improvement decisions. Learners map and observe workflows, identify gaps between documented and actual processes, and examine how involvement and change management affect adoption. They also design data collection plans, assess measurement reliability, and select appropriate data displays to reveal patterns and support evidence-based decisions.
  • Root Causes, Waste, Flow, and Solutions
    • Builds the analytical skills needed to identify what is really preventing a process from performing effectively. Learners apply root cause analysis, verify suspected causes with data, distinguish value-adding from non-value-adding activities, and identify common forms of waste. They also examine where time is lost through waiting, apply appropriate flow improvements, and generate and evaluate multiple solution options rather than adopting the first proposed answer.
  • Design Approaches and Making Improvement Stick
    • Focuses on designing better processes and sustaining improvements over time. Learners explore prevention, Design for Six Sigma, design thinking, and agile approaches before applying DMAIC to improvement projects. The module also covers rapid improvement events, operational excellence, project selection, governance, and the standards, measures, and ownership needed to prevent improvements from reverting after implementation.
  • Course Wrap-Up and Next Steps
    • Provides practical reference and application resources that help learners consolidate and apply the Lean Six Sigma capabilities developed throughout the course. Resources reinforce customer requirements, process mapping, data collection, root cause analysis, waste identification, flow improvement, solution generation, prevention, design approaches, DMAIC, and sustainment. The section also includes an integrative project in which learners define and plan a complete improvement project for a real process, supported by measurable customer requirements, process and data analysis, verified root causes, solution selection, DMAIC sequencing, and a control plan that sustains the improvement.
