Basic technical understanding and familiarity with industrial processes may be helpful but are not mandatory. Welcome to the Industrial Metaverse

This module introduces the Industrial Metaverse (IMV), differentiating it from other metaverses and explaining its three pillars: Industrial AI, the Digital Twin, and Software-Defined Automation. It covers the five defining features of the IMV, namely interactivity, immersion, interoperability, collaboration, and the use of Industrial AI, and illustrates these with examples such as wind turbine design. The module then discusses the convergence of technologies enabling the IMV and explores a landscape of use cases along product and production lifecycles. Benefits such as lifecycle continuity, faster innovation, and sustainability are highlighted, alongside expert perspectives on future directions of the IMV.

3 Pillars of the Industrial Metaverse

This module presents the three pillars of the Industrial Metaverse (IMV): the Digital Twin, Industrial AI, and Software-Defined Automation. It begins with the Digital Twin pillar of the IMV, reviewing its importance in business and its evolution. It explains the characteristics of a comprehensive and executable Digital Twin and details the process of building one by combining physics-based simulation and AI, exemplified by optimizing beer production. Learners get to know current applications of Digital Twins like predictive maintenance and operational efficiency, and experts give insights on what future developments of the Digital Twin will bring to the IMV. The module then turns to Industrial AI and emphasizes its central role in the IMV. Starting with an activating quiz, it covers AI evolution, foundational concepts, and distinctions between Industrial AI and Consumer AI. It addresses requirements for industrial-grade AI through Siemens’ framework and explains AI’s integration into the IMV, including AI-accelerated simulations and user interactions. The module concludes with Software-Defined Automation (SDA). Exploring the shift from hardware-based to software-centric automation, this module presents SDA as the third pillar of the IMV. It traces the history of software-defined IT and automation in general, explains SDA’s growing significance and benefits, and provides real-world examples. The relationship between SDA and the IMV is detailed, including intelligent automation and virtualized runtime, with expert guidance on implementing SDA.

Industrial Metaverse Use cases

This module explores use cases from the Industrial Metaverse (IMV) connecting people, data, and decisions across product and production lifecycles. The module begins with use cases that highlight the impact of the IMV on design and engineering phases. Learners get to hear from experts about brownfield design at the Siemens Electronics Factory Erlangen, collaborative engineering, immersive product design, and cross-company model exchange fostering trust. The module then continues with use cases focusing on commissioning and production: this covers virtual commissioning using synthetic data, challenges of data access in older machines, and creative sensor solutions. It also addresses efficient material flow design through simulation in the IMV. In the third part of this module, learners get to know use cases related to production and continuous improvement. Experts demonstrate how the IMV supports real-time asset monitoring, issue detection, and production optimization. Further topics discussed include operator dashboards, data-sensor fusion, anomaly detection via Digital Twins in older machines, and virtual simulation for workplace optimization. The module concludes with use cases in the IMV that focus on sustainability and the environment, featuring, for example, modern city planning with Virtual World technologies. A special environmental use case of the IMV is presented, namely the Digital Reefs project for coral reef preservation. Finally, learners get to know how digital enterprises leverage the IMV to improve product and production sustainability focusing on decarbonization and resource efficiency.

Understanding the IMV - Deep-dives

This module dives deeper into some of the concepts that play an important role in the Industrial Metaverse (IMV). It begins with immersive engineering. Learners are introduced to its benefits and to the foundational technologies behind the ‘immersive experience’ in the IMV, such as Digital Twin infrastructure and XR (eXtended Reality) hardware. Furthermore, learners will hear from expert about current applications including training, real-time problem solving, and collaborative factory planning. The module then turns to physics-based simulation, explaining what it is, which applications exist, and what role it plays in the IMV. Experts break down the Digital Twin into stages, discuss simulation strengths and limitations, and present both challenges and solutions like Reduced Order Modeling alongside commercial tool examples. In the third part of this module, the learner dives deeper into IT/OT convergence. First, the term convergence is explained, providing examples from various fields. Then the convergence of IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) and its significance in the IMV are discussed. The module highlights the importance of technical infrastructure in factories, outlines a stepwise infrastructure-building approach, and describes human roles involved in IT/OT integration. The module concludes with a deep dive into ecosystems and digital threads which are key ingredients of the IMV. Ecosystems comprising infrastructure providers, technology partners, and startups are needed to build the IMV, where each partner contributes to the overall success. Digital threads integrate virtual and real-world operations, they form a pathway connecting various lifecycle phases and systems, enabling a seamless data flow from product design through production to operation and service.

IMV Enablers Foundations

This module covers four important ‘enablers’ of the Industrial Metaverse (IMV), technologies without which the IMV would not be possible. The first part of this module is about cloud computing, its concepts, and its technical and operational aspects. Different cloud service models such as SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) are presented. The learners get to know examples of cloud computing applications in the IMV, highlighting benefits like data processing and simulation support. The second part of the module is about edge computing which brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is needed, the so-called “edge” of the network. This is particularly significant when the volume of data generated by devices is very large, such as in the industrial context in the IMV. Edge computing enhances speed, efficiency and reliability. The module then turns to industrial cybersecurity. It introduces the learners to cybersecurity basics, including hacker motivations and malware. It emphasizes cybersecurity’s critical role in operational technology (OT), explaining the CIA triangle (confidentiality, integrity, availability) with a focus on availability in industrial settings. It discusses industrial risks and threats, layered security strategies like Defense in Depth and Zero Trust, and practical daily actions to enhance resilience against cyberattacks. The fourth part of the module explains what the umbrella term XR (eXtended Reality) covers, namely Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR). In the IMV, XR technologies play an important role, as they enable users to immerse themselves in virtual realities and to collaborate with people who are far away in the physical world, to give just two examples of their benefits. In the IMV, XR technologies offer innovative ways to interact with information and the environment.

IMV Outlook

This module gives an outlook on what experts expect for the future of the Industrial Metaverse (IMV). In the first part, it explores the IMV’s impact on business models. Learners hear from experts how business model innovation becomes possible in the IMV. The module then turns to detailing five examples of business models including ‘Product as a Service’ and ‘Digital Twin as a Service’. The second part of this module covers the implementation and scaling of the IMV. It goes deeper into IMV implementation requirements, and learners hear from experts about the critical role of ecosystems and partnerships. Furthermore, the influence of regulation, interoperability, and standardization on IMV ecosystems and platforms is discussed. The module concludes with experts giving an outlook on what they see as the future of the IMV. It highlights the IMV’s exciting opportunities, revisits its three pillars and key features, explains real-digital integration via the Digital Twin, and explores how the IMV transforms work and collaboration. It also discusses new opportunities in product design and industrial production enabled by the IMV.

Final Module

In this final module, you will bring together everything you have learned throughout the Industrial Metaverse course. The module begins with a concise summary that revisits the most important concepts and insights covered in previous sections — from the foundational principles and the three pillars of the Industrial Metaverse to its practical use cases and enabling technologies. You will review how Digital Twins, Simulation, and Collaboration Platforms interact to form the core of the Industrial Metaverse, explore how companies apply these technologies across different stages of the industrial value chain, and reflect on the role of key enablers such as AI, cybersecurity, connectivity, and extended reality. The summary also highlights the growing potential and scalability of the Industrial Metaverse, offering a glimpse into its future impact across industries.
