This foundational course sets the stage for DevOps culture, DevOps mindset, Lean software development, and organizational performance. You'll learn how DevOps improves collaboration between development and operations teams, reduces waste, strengthens feedback loops, and supports faster, higher-quality software delivery. The course covers core models and practices including CAMS/CALMS, the Three Ways, Lean principles and wastes, Improvement Kata, A3 problem solving, the Westrum model, value stream mapping, leadership approaches, and DevOps metrics such as deployment frequency, change failure rate, MTTR, and eNPS. Through case studies and practice projects, you will examine how teams used these ideas to improve release frequency, reduce incidents, and explain the value of DevOps to organizational leaders. This course is for DevOps beginners, learners working in development or operations contexts, and anyone helping a team adopt a stronger culture of continuous improvement. By the end of this course, you'll be able to: - Define DevOps and explain the CAMS and CALMS core values. - Describe how the Three Ways support systems thinking, feedback loops, and continuous experimentation. - Identify Lean principles and wastes that affect software delivery flow and quality. - Use Improvement Kata and A3 problem solving to guide continuous improvement efforts. - Compare pathological, bureaucratic, and generative cultures with the Westrum model. - Distinguish outputs from outcomes and interpret key DevOps metrics, including deployment frequency, change failure rate, MTTR, and eNPS. - Apply case study and value stream mapping insights to explain DevOps benefits to stakeholders and leaders.

Syllabus

  • Course Introduction
    • In this module, you will get oriented to the course and the broader DevOps Culture and Mindset specialization. You will meet your instructor, review what the specialization covers, and learn how to use course resources such as navigation tools, discussion forums, learner support, issue reporting, academic integrity guidance, and online safety information. You will also begin reflecting on why DevOps matters, especially for teams dealing with silos, painful releases, quality challenges, slow delivery, or pressure to deliver more customer value.
  • Introducing DevOps Concepts
    • In this module, you will build a foundation in the key ideas behind DevOps. You will define DevOps using industry perspectives and the CAMS/CALMS frameworks, explore how DevOps connects to Lean management, and examine the Three Ways: systems thinking, feedback loops, and continual experimentation and learning. You will also learn how Lean principles and wastes apply to software delivery, how Improvement Kata and A3 problem solving support continuous improvement, and how the Westrum model can help you understand organizational culture. The module also introduces leadership behaviors, outcome-based metrics, and case studies that show how DevOps can support faster delivery, stronger quality, better collaboration, and improved business results.
  • Review and Final Quiz
    • In this module, you will review and check your understanding of the DevOps concepts introduced in the course. The final quiz gives you an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about DevOps definitions, CAMS/CALMS, Lean principles and wastes, the Three Ways, Improvement Kata, A3 problem solving, the Westrum model, leadership behaviors, outcome-based metrics, and DevOps case studies.
