Welcome to the International Organizations and Policy Regimes course! By the end of this course, you will gain a conceptual, analytical, and empirical understanding of the role of International Organizations and Policy Regimes in influencing economic growth and the overall developmental agenda at the national and international levels. The world is witnessing global challenges that include poverty, conflict, pandemic, migration, hunger, climate change, and many other issues. As a prominent part of this course, you will learn about the significance and role of international organizations and their policy implications on these issues. You will also learn about the historical context, contemporary debates, theories, methods, and processes related to the functioning of international organizations, policies, and their global ramifications. In addition, you will examine the emergence of international actors, including non-state international organizations, that play a role in addressing global issues. The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of international organizations, particularly concerning the role of formal international organizations and their transition in policy regimes over a period.

Syllabus

  • The Basis and Evolution of International Organizations (IOs)
    • In this module, you will examine the evolution and growth of international organizations (IOs). The module discusses the significance of IOs in global politics, international relations, and global governance and how that came about. As you learn about the emergence of the League of Nations and the establishment of United Nations systems, you will explore how the UN contributes to global public goods by setting global norms, standards, and principles.
  • Theory and Methods of International Organizations (IOs)
    • In this module, you will learn about the theoretical approaches to understanding international organizations (IOs). You will critically analyze the structure, functions, processes, and governance mechanisms of IOs. You will also learn about the characteristics and different purposes of IOs.
  • Towards a Rule-Based International System: Actors, Organizations, and Governance
    • International organizations (IOs) are critical in addressing issues and concerns that transcend national boundaries. In this module, you will explore how IOs complement and strengthen national institutions by developing and promoting standard solutions through forming intergovernmental committees and working groups at the global level. You will also examine the different forms or categories of IOs that include state and non-state actors in the global governance domain.
  • Development and Finance Institutions
    • This module introduces you to the emergence of the new global economic architecture. This era witnessed the growth of global regulatory institutions based on the global markets in which capital, goods, and, to some extent, labor were perceived to move freely. You will learn about Bretton Woods institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), that provide financial and advisory support for development, poverty reduction, and the stability of the international monetary system. You will also examine the role of the regional development banks, other financial institutions, and multi-country arrangements in the global economy.
  • International Trade Agreements and Organizations
    • In this module, you will explore the global trade regime with associated organizations and agreements. The module reflects on the World Trade Organization’s evolution, significance, and potential, which regulates and facilitates international trade and agreements. You will also delve into regionalism to understand its concept, benefits, and opportunities for regional integration and assess the potential and contribution of regional trade blocs to economic integration.
  • Labor, Migration, Refugees, and Related Organizations
    • In this module, you will examine the key aspects of the labor, migrant, and refugee issues and concerns. You will explore how international organizations and non-state actors have positioned and equipped themselves to address the issues of labor, decent work, refugees, and migrant workers.
  • Global Economic, Social, and Environmental Policies: Evolving Discourses and Interventions
    • This module discusses the dominance of international financial capitalism and the global governance crisis. You will learn about the role of international organizations (IOs) in shaping global policies regarding climate change and other environmental shifts, public health emergencies, and human rights. You will also examine the role of IOs as forums for international agreements related to these concerns to strengthen the global capacity to address them.
