By the end of this course, learners will be able to interpret, evaluate, and design effective BMS interfaces for Air Handling Units (AHUs) to support efficient monitoring and operation. They will learn how clear layouts, logical navigation, visual hierarchy, consistent symbols, and well-organized information improve operator situational awareness and decision-making. Through guided walkthroughs, practical activities, and AHU dashboard examples, learners will explore operating parameters, equipment status, commands, alarms, trends, schedules, and navigation commonly used in BMS interfaces. They will also examine how usability principles, operator feedback, and usability testing can be used to identify interface problems and improve dashboard effectiveness. This course builds on BMS and AHU fundamentals and prepares learners to evaluate and design operator-focused interfaces that support faster information retrieval, clearer fault identification, and effective AHU monitoring and operation.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to User Interface (HMI) Design in BMS
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design in Building Management Systems (BMS), with a focus on AHU interfaces. You will explore key HMI components, design principles, navigation, visual hierarchy, accessibility, and how control logic is translated into intuitive interface elements. Through videos, interactive activities, and practical examples, you will build the skills to design clear, user-friendly interfaces that support efficient monitoring, decision-making, and control.
  • Designing an AHU Interface for Efficient Control
    • This module focuses on designing and developing functional AHU interfaces for Building Management Systems (BMS). You will explore how to structure AHU graphical views, organize navigation, and integrate real-time data, controls, alarms, and schedules using EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO). Through videos, practical examples, and hands-on activities, you will learn to create intuitive, consistent, and operationally effective AHU HMIs and validate them against real-world requirements.
  • Advanced Features (Real-Time Data & Alarms)
    • This module explores advanced features and usability principles for designing effective AHU interfaces in BMS systems. Learners will examine how real-time data monitoring, alarms, trend visualization, and predictive alerts can improve operator awareness and system reliability. The module also introduces usability testing methods for evaluating interface clarity, navigation, responsiveness, and error prevention. Through hands-on activities, learners will analyze AHU dashboards, identify usability issues, and refine interface layouts based on feedback and established design principles.
