The Hardware and OS Foundations Capstone is the culminating experience for students completing the Hardware and OS Foundations I, II, and III specialization. This capstone provides an opportunity to integrate and apply the key concepts learned across the three courses, including computer hardware architecture, operating system fundamentals, and system-level problem solving. Through the capstone, students will demonstrate their ability to analyze and apply hardware and operating system concepts in practical scenarios. Successful completion of the capstone confirms proficiency in core hardware and OS foundations and may serve as evidence of readiness for further study, including eligibility to begin the MIT degree program or earning a certificate demonstrating competency in hardware and operating system systems.

Syllabus

  • Module 1: Capstone Overview and Scope
    • The Hardware and OS Foundations Capstone is the culminating experience of the three-course Hardware and OS Foundations specialization. In this capstone, you will integrate and apply key concepts — including computer hardware architecture, operating system fundamentals, and system-level problem solving — through practical, real-world scenarios. Successful completion demonstrates your proficiency in core hardware and OS concepts and signals your readiness for the next step in your career or academic journey. Upon completion, you will earn a certificate that validates your expertise and can be used to pursue professional opportunities or apply directly to the Master of Information Technology program at Illinois Tech.
  • Module 2: Final Comprehensive Assessment
    • This module contains the specialization's final, timed assessment. This rigorous test is designed to prove your retention and understanding of the curriculum. You will be presented with questions that you need to integrate concepts from all previous modules. Note: If you completed Hardware and Operating Systems I, II, or III several months ago, please revisit the course activities and content before attempting the Capstone. A brief review will help you refresh key concepts and set yourself up for success on the exam.
