As healthcare data volumes grow and analytics roles expand, the ability to turn data into clear, actionable insights is now a critical skill. In this course, you’ll gain practical skills to design, build, and communicate effective healthcare visualizations that support clinical, operational, and strategic decision-making. You’ll develop a strong foundation in visualization principles, including chart selection, color theory, layout, and accessibility, and apply these skills using industry-standard visualization tools, such as Google Looker Studio. The course moves from creating professional charts to building interactive dashboards for clinical quality, hospital operations, and population health. You’ll learn advanced techniques, such as geospatial mapping, network views, and visual storytelling, to present insights to clinicians, administrators, and executives. Through activities, role-based scenarios, labs, and projects, you’ll practice real-world decision-making and build job-ready dashboards and reports. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to confidently design and present healthcare visualizations that turn complex data into clear, actionable insights.

Syllabus

  • Foundations of Healthcare Data Visualization
    • This module introduces you to the core principles of effective data visualization in healthcare settings. You will explore fundamental design concepts including chart selection, color theory, layout principles, and accessibility considerations. The module covers how to choose appropriate visualization types for different data structures and healthcare use cases, from patient demographics to clinical outcomes. You will gain hands-on experience with visualization software to create professional-quality charts, graphs, and plots. Emphasis is placed on avoiding common visualization pitfalls, ensuring accuracy in data representation, and designing visualizations that support clinical decision-making. By the end of this module, you will understand visualization best practices and be able to create clear, compelling charts that effectively communicate healthcare data patterns to clinical and administrative audiences.
  • Building Interactive Dashboards for Healthcare
    • This module teaches learners how to build interactive, dynamic dashboards that support real-time healthcare decision-making. Students master dashboard software fundamentals and advanced features to create clinical scorecards, operational dashboards, and population health monitors. The module covers dashboard design principles, interactivity best practices, and how to structure information for different healthcare audiences—from clinicians needing patient-level details to executives requiring high-level performance metrics. Learners explore filter design, drill-down capabilities, parameter controls, and responsive layouts that work across devices. Through hands-on projects, students build dashboards for hospital operations (ED wait times, bed utilization), clinical quality (readmission rates, infection control), and population health (chronic disease management, preventive care). By the end of this module, learners will be able to design and deploy professional healthcare dashboards that empower stakeholders with actionable, real-time insights.
  • Advanced Visualization and Strategic Communication
    • This module focuses on advanced visualization techniques and effective communication strategies for presenting healthcare analytics to diverse stakeholders. Learners master advanced visualizations including geospatial analysis for population health, network diagrams for patient flow, and animated visualizations for temporal trends. The module covers visual storytelling principles—how to structure analytical narratives, create compelling presentations, and translate complex findings into actionable recommendations for clinical and executive audiences. Students explore performance reporting frameworks, executive dashboard design, and how to align visualizations with organizational strategic goals. The module emphasizes tailoring communication style and detail level to different audiences: clinicians need clinical context and patient-level detail, administrators need operational metrics and efficiency measures, and executives need strategic KPIs and financial impacts. By the end of this module, learners will be able to create sophisticated visualizations and deliver presentations that drive organizational change and improve healthcare outcomes.
  • Final Project, Exam, and Wrap-Up
    • In this final module, you’ll consolidate your learning by completing a hands-on final project. In this project, you will apply the knowledge gained throughout the course to design and build an interactive dashboard system consisting of 3 dashboards: clinical quality dashboard, operational performance dashboard, and executive strategic dashboard.
