In this course, you will learn about Gender-Based Violence (GBV): its roots, causes, and manifestations. You will understand that GBV is a global phenomenon that can only be eradicated through collective action. Trigger warning: please be aware that some content of the course (such as Sexual assault, Sexual violence, abuse, LGBTQ+ issues or discrimination) may be distressing or triggering for some individuals. Feel free to step away or skip some of them if needed. Syllabus

  • Introduction
    • What is Gender-Based Violence, and why is it a crucial issue in the academic context? In this first video, you will see a performance acted by Politecnico di Milano students, based on sentences taken from real testimonies of university students collected through an Instagram initiative, followed by a summary of what is expected during the course
  • Definition of Gender Based Violence and Types of Gender Based Violence
    • In this module, you will learn how broad the GBV phenomenon is and why it affects everyone. We will delve into its different manifestations, with a special focus on femicide, digital-based violence, and microaggressions.
  • Causes of Gender Based Violence and Intersectionality
    • In this module, we will explore some of the causes of gender-based violence and the role of patriarchal culture. We will focus on the role of men as perpetrators, and we will discuss consent and its crucial importance. Intersectionality is another key aspect, and we will examine how gender-based violence translates into the experiences of LGBTQI+ communities.
  • How to become an active bystander
    • Have you ever witnessed an episode of violence or harassment and didn’t know how to react? In this module, we will give you some practical advice on how to act safely in these situations and become an active bystander. We will also introduce the 5D model, which will provide you with concrete strategies to apply in real-life academic scenarios.
  • Addressing GBV at Polimi
    • In this module, we will explore an educational project in communication design aimed at addressing gender-based violence, and we will see how design can be an ally in its prevention.
  • Protection against Gender Based Violence
    • Do you know which laws protect victims of gender-based violence in the Italian and European context? In this module, a police commissioner will explain the legal framework and areas of intervention, with references to concrete and real cases.
