Fiber Optics and Photonics/Design & Activate WDM/DWDM Fiber

Coursera via Coursera

Overview

Modern networks rely on wavelength-division multiplexing to scale capacity, improve resilience, and support long-term growth. This course is designed for network engineers and architects who need to confidently design, activate, and evaluate CWDM and DWDM fiber links in real-world environments. Learners move beyond theory to focus on practical engineering judgment—how small configuration decisions affect link stability, how to interpret optical measurements, and how to justify design choices to peers, vendors, and leadership. Across four lessons, learners practice activating an 8-channel CWDM link, diagnosing power and OSNR imbalances in DWDM spans, evaluating link budgets to determine maximum reach, and designing wavelength plans for metro rings that balance current needs with future expansion. Hands-on activities emphasize realistic workflows such as reading OSA spectra, tracing faults to specific components, validating margins, and documenting defensible plans. By the end of the course, learners are prepared to make confident, evidence-based decisions when deploying and scaling WDM networks in production settings.

Syllabus

  • Activating a CWDM Link
    • This module introduces the practical foundations of CWDM activation. Learners focus on assigning wavelengths, setting launch power, and validating link health so an 8-channel CWDM system is ready to carry traffic reliably.
  • Diagnosing Power and OSNR Imbalance
    • This module builds diagnostic skills for DWDM spans by focusing on power levels, OSNR, and spectrum analysis. Learners practice tracing imbalance to root causes using evidence rather than assumption.
  • DWDM Link Budget and Reach Planning
    • This module builds diagnostic skills for DWDM spans by focusing on power levels, OSNR, and spectrum analysis. Learners practice tracing imbalance to root causes using evidence rather than assumption.
  • Wavelength Planning for Metro Rings
    • This module shifts from analysis to design. Learners create wavelength plans that support core and access nodes while preserving capacity for future growth.
