Fashion Values: Cultures looks at the role of fashion as a powerful medium for the representation and amplification of voices and cultures from around the world. Yet fashion can also be responsible for the silencing, shaming and marginalising of individual and collective narratives.
Through this course, you'll be able to engage with stories of human ingenuity and creativity as they are expressed through fashion. We approach culture through two lenses: the concept of style-fashion-dress and storytelling.
At the heart of this is a question we invite you to explore: Whose stories does fashion tell, and whose does it silence?
Fashion Values: Cultures aims to develop your skills in looking, listening and learning from and with others to explore multiple and diverse visions of fashion's place in the world.
This course uses design thinking and storytelling to explore ideas including cultural appropriation and street style, as well as ideas about materials, durability and longevity. Throughout the course you will be able to put your skills into practice.
You'll join a community of learners who are curious about how fashion shapes, and is shaped by, culture.
This course is for those working in fashion, studying fashion, teaching fashion, and anyone with an interest in sustainability in and through fashion. No experience in drawing, photography or filmmaking is needed. Just bring curiosity about the stories fashion tells, and the ones it leaves untold.
This course is led by fashion and sustainability experts from Centre for Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion, drawing on knowledge from world-leading researchers and practitioners working at the forefront of fashion's cultural and storytelling traditions.
