Syllabus

Innovation and Business Strategy

This module introduces the core concepts and frameworks that underpin effective business strategy, with a particular focus on innovation in dynamic and competitive environments. Learners begin by developing a clear understanding of what strategy is and why it matters, before applying structured analytical tools to assess internal capabilities and external market conditions. The module explores widely used strategic frameworks, including SWOT analysis, Porter’s Five Forces, the value chain, the resource-based view, and the T-M-O framework, enabling learners to analyse organisations from multiple perspectives. Learners also examine the strategic tension between exploration and exploitation, gaining insight into how businesses balance innovation with operational efficiency. In addition, the module addresses how to identify unique selling propositions, understand market structures and conditions, and analyse business ecosystems. Through practical examples and case studies, learners are encouraged to assess how different strategic choices influence competitiveness, growth, and long-term sustainability.

Pitch Decks

This module focuses on helping learners design and deliver effective pitch decks that clearly communicate their venture’s value to investors and stakeholders. It begins by clarifying the difference between a teaser deck and a full pitch deck, enabling learners to choose the right format for different fundraising and communication contexts. Learners explore the essential components of a strong pitch deck, including problem definition, solution, market opportunity, business model, traction, team, and financials. The module also covers how to structure and design a deck to ensure clarity, coherence, and visual impact, while avoiding common pitfalls that can weaken a pitch. In addition, learners examine different pitch narratives and how to adapt them based on audience, objectives, and stage of the venture. Insights from investors are analysed to help learners understand what decision-makers look for and how they evaluate opportunities. The module concludes by highlighting practical dos and don’ts of pitching, supporting learners in presenting their ideas with confidence and credibility.

Entrepreneurial Finance and Literacy

This module introduces the core financial concepts and tools that entrepreneurs need to understand, manage, and communicate the financial health of their ventures. It is designed to build financial literacy without assuming a finance background, enabling learners to engage confidently with investors, partners, and advisors. Learners begin by familiarising themselves with essential accounting, analytical, programming, and business terminology commonly used in entrepreneurial and investment contexts. The module then explores key financial metrics and equations that support informed decision-making, performance tracking, and growth planning. The module also introduces financial projections, breaking down their main components, purposes, and types, and explaining how they are used to anticipate future performance and assess business viability. Learners examine EBITDA in detail, understanding its structure, benefits, and limitations as a performance indicator. Finally, the module covers the fundamentals of valuation, comparing different valuation methods and their applicability at various stages of a start-up, including pre-revenue ventures.

Fundraising & Exit Options

This module provides entrepreneurs with a structured understanding of how start-ups are funded and how investors ultimately realise returns. It equips learners with the knowledge needed to navigate fundraising conversations confidently and make informed decisions about capital and long-term exit strategies. The module begins by introducing key investment terms that entrepreneurs must understand to engage effectively with investors. Learners then explore the full range of funding sources, including bootstrapping, friends and family funding, grants and government support, debt financing, sweat equity, and investor-led funding models such as equity, royalty-based financing, and debt. The advantages and trade-offs of each option are examined to support informed capital decisions. The module also compares angel investors and venture capitalists, outlining their roles, expectations, and typical involvement. Learners gain a clear view of the fundraising journey, from pre-seed and seed rounds to Series A, B, and C, alongside an introduction to venture capital structures and financing vehicles. Key legal and financial documents, including term sheets, letters of intent, cap tables, and dilution mechanisms, are analysed in a practical and accessible way. Finally, the module explores exit strategies, including mergers and acquisitions, helping entrepreneurs align fundraising choices with long-term business outcomes.
