This course helps you understand how organizations decide what to pay employees and how those decisions affect hiring, performance, and retention. You’ll explore the different forms of compensation, including wages, salaries, incentives, benefits, and non-financial rewards. You’ll also learn how employment laws, labor market conditions, business goals, and employee expectations influence pay decisions. Practical examples will show you how to compare pay strategies, examine the work involved in a job, and create clear job descriptions and requirements. As you move through the course, you’ll discover how organizations compare jobs, use salary survey data, and group positions into pay grades and salary ranges. You’ll also learn how to spot common problems, such as employees being paid inconsistently or experienced employees earning less than new hires. Whether you’re new to HR or want a clearer understanding of compensation, this course will give you a practical foundation for making pay decisions that are fair, competitive, and easier to explain.

Syllabus

  • Employee Compensation Foundations and Decisions
    • Compensation decisions affect an organization’s ability to attract, motivate, and retain employees while supporting its goals. You’ll examine the purposes and components of compensation, distinguish direct and indirect compensation from non-financial rewards, and consider legal requirements, labor market conditions, and workforce needs. By the end, you’ll be able to evaluate compensation choices for balance, compliance, and alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Selecting Pay Strategies and Defining Jobs
    • Effective pay decisions require both a clear market position and accurate information about the work being performed. You’ll compare lead-, match-, and lag-the-market strategies, examine tradeoffs between internal equity and external competitiveness, and use job analysis to define responsibilities and qualifications. By the end, you’ll be able to select an appropriate pay strategy and develop job documentation that supports consistent compensation decisions.
  • Designing and Evaluating Pay Structures
    • Pay structures help organizations turn job value and market data into consistent compensation decisions. You’ll compare job evaluation methods, interpret compensation survey results, organize jobs into pay grades, develop salary ranges, and examine common pay issues and corrective strategies. By the end, you’ll be able to construct and evaluate a pay structure for internal consistency, market competitiveness, strategic alignment, and pay equity.
  • Applying Compensation Strategy and Judgment
    • Compensation decisions rarely involve a single factor. In this final module, you’ll bring together compensation objectives, legal requirements, organizational priorities, job documentation, internal job value, market data, and pay structure analysis. You’ll apply these concepts to realistic workplace scenarios, weigh competing considerations, and use professional judgment to recommend compensation approaches that are fair, competitive, compliant, financially sustainable, and aligned with workforce and organizational needs.
