By the end of this course, you’ll be able to use AI to make your writing clearer and stronger without losing what makes it yours. Taught by writer, designer, and creator Jacob Magnell, this course explores what happens when AI takes over your writing too early—and how to use it as a creative partner instead. You’ll learn how to identify where AI can weaken your ideas, build a process that keeps your thinking at the center, and use AI to edit and clarify your work without flattening your voice. Through hands-on experiments, you’ll compare what happens when AI enters the writing process at different stages and discover where it actually saves time—and where it doesn’t. This course is for writers, creatives, professionals, and anyone who uses AI to write but wants their work to feel more thoughtful, personal, and original. To be successful, you should have some basic experience writing and familiarity with AI writing tools, but no technical background is required. Most importantly, you should be willing to embrace a little friction—and see it as part of making something worth reading.

Syllabus

Writing with AI: Why It’s Harder Than It Looks
- AI can make writing faster, but using it effectively requires more than simply asking a chatbot to write for you. In this module, you’ll examine the challenges of introducing new technology into an established writing process and consider what you want AI to contribute to your work. You’ll also establish a framework for the class project and begin thinking critically about how to use AI without losing your individual voice.
AI and Your Voice: Taking Back Control
- What happens when you give an AI tool too much control over your writing? In this module, you’ll explore what it means to let AI take the lead and examine how large language models can influence the way we think and write. You’ll then learn strategies for taking back control, using AI as a tool to support your ideas rather than allowing it to replace your creative judgment and individual voice.
Evaluating and Editing AI-Generated Writing
- Using AI effectively means knowing when its output is useful—and when it needs work. In this module, you’ll learn how to evaluate AI-generated writing and consider whether AI genuinely saves time in your creative process. You’ll also explore how AI can support editing and revision, giving you practical ways to improve your writing while making the final decisions yourself.
Putting AI-Assisted Editing Into Practice
- Now it’s time to put your approach into practice. You’ll use AI to edit your own writing, applying the techniques from the previous modules while making deliberate choices about what to keep, change, or reject. You’ll finish by reflecting on the broader role of AI in writing and considering how you can use these tools without sacrificing the voice and judgment that make your work your own.
