Syllabus

  • Getting Started with Canva and Design Workflow
    • This module helps learners build confidence with Canva’s workspace while establishing efficient design workflows from the start. Learners explore the Canva interface, understand how projects are created, and learn how design dimensions vary across digital and print use cases. The module emphasizes foundational workflow habits such as organizing assets, managing layers, aligning elements, and exporting designs correctly. Rather than focusing on aesthetics alone, learners are taught how structure, alignment, and spacing directly affect clarity and professionalism. Career context is introduced early to help learners understand how Canva skills translate into real-world opportunities. By the end of this module, learners can navigate the editor smoothly, manage design elements with control, avoid common beginner errors, and prepare designs correctly for different outputs—creating a strong foundation for all future design work.
  • Layout, Composition & Visual Hierarchy
    • This module focuses on teaching learners how to structure designs so information is easy to scan, understand, and act upon. Learners explore grids, margins, spacing rules, and whitespace to build clean layouts that feel balanced rather than crowded. The module introduces visual hierarchy concepts—such as size, contrast, and placement—to guide attention and improve readability. Learners also study common composition patterns like Z-patterns, F-patterns, and centered layouts, learning when and why to use each. Practical examples help learners diagnose layout problems and fix them without redesigning from scratch. By the end of this module, learners can confidently organize content, establish clear reading paths, place CTAs effectively, and design layouts that communicate messages clearly across different formats.
  • Typography Fundamentals in Canva
    • This module teaches learners how to work with text confidently and intentionally. Learners explore font categories, tone matching, and readability principles to ensure text supports the message rather than distracting from it. The module covers font pairing rules, hierarchy creation, and type scaling, helping learners build consistent and professional-looking text systems. Learners also practice managing line spacing, alignment, text containers, and columns within Canva. Special attention is given to avoiding common typography mistakes such as overcrowding, poor contrast, and excessive effects. By the end of this module, learners can select appropriate fonts, pair them effectively, structure text hierarchies, and fix “messy text” designs—resulting in cleaner, more readable layouts across design types.
  • Color, Imagery & Template Adaptation
    • This module helps learners enhance visual appeal while maintaining consistency and clarity. Learners are introduced to basic color theory, palette roles, and harmony, with a strong emphasis on contrast and accessibility. The module also covers effective image selection, layering techniques, and icon consistency to maintain visual coherence. A key focus is placed on template adaptation—teaching learners how to audit existing templates, identify structural elements, and systematically customize them into original designs. Rather than relying on templates unchanged, learners develop a repeatable workflow to transform templates while applying learned design principles. By the end of this module, learners can confidently use color, imagery, and templates to create designs that look intentional, accessible, and uniquely their own.
  • AI-Assisted Design Foundations with Canva
    • This module introduces learners to Canva’s AI capabilities while reinforcing the importance of human design judgment. Learners explore Magic Studio features such as Magic Design and Magic Write, understanding where AI adds value and where manual refinement is essential. The module emphasizes prompt writing, evaluating AI-generated outputs, and improving them using layout, typography, and hierarchy principles learned earlier. Ethical considerations and originality are addressed to ensure learners do not over-rely on automation or produce generic designs. Hands-on activities guide learners in turning one AI-generated layout into multiple refined variations through intentional design decisions. By the end of this module, learners can confidently use AI as a creative assistant—speeding up ideation and production while maintaining originality, clarity, and design integrity.
