Syllabus

Understanding Democracy
- What does it mean to have a democracy? In this module, learners will explore what democracy is, how it differs from other forms of government, and the basic ideas that help it work over time. They will examine how the organizations, rules, and shared expectations that guide public life support democracy, why trust and accountability matter, and why it is important for people from different backgrounds to have opportunities to participate. Along the way, learners will discover how democracy shapes everyday life and why it matters for strong, thriving communities.
Power, Rights, and Government
- Democracies are built on rules and systems that shape how government works. In this module, learners will explore how democracies are designed to share power, prevent any one person or group from having too much control, and protect the rights of everyone. They will learn how elections, laws, and constitutions help shape government, give people a voice, and guide decision-making, and how democracies balance the will of the majority while protecting the rights of minority groups.
Information, Participation, and Influence
- Democracy depends on the everyday actions of people, organizations, and the flow of information. In this module, learners will explore how news and information, community organizations, political parties, public opinion, and public action influence democracy in daily life. They will examine how these forces help people make their voices heard, hold leaders accountable, build trust, and shape the decisions that affect their communities.
Challenges to Democracy
- Democracies can weaken over time when those in positions of power misuse their authority, manipulate election rules, allow corruption to spread, or undermine public trust. In this module, learners will explore how corruption, unfair elections, political division, misinformation, and the misuse of government power can weaken democracy. They will also examine how courts, elections, independent media, community organizations, and individuals help protect democracy and support its long-term health.
