Data processing is essential in all research fields, and Excel is one of the most widely used general-purpose tools for data processing on personal computers. Through lectures and hands-on practice, this course introduces both fundamental and advanced Excel functions for data processing.

Syllabus

Introduction
- Students will learn the essential background knowledge, including supporting documentations, definitions of input, return and display values, and useful tools and hotkeys, essential for completion of this course.
Cell references
- This module introduces Excel cell references, value types, formula auto-adjustment, and absolute references. It also covers key functions such as INDIRECT, ADDRESS, and INDEX.
Conditional (IF) and Logical functions (AND, OR, NOT)
- Students will learn the fundamentals of the conditional IF function and the logical TRUE/FALSE. This module will also introduce other conditional and logical functions, including AND, OR, and IFS, and essential concepts for parameter input.
Statistical Functions
- This module introduces basic Excel statistical and mathematical functions, including COUNT, SUM, AVERAGE, LARGE, and RANK. Students will also learn how value of different types and array formulas affect calculations.
Statistical functions combined with conditional expression and logical functions
- Students will learn to use conditional-based statistical functions such as COUNTIF, SUMIF, SUMIFS, and AVERAGEIFS. Students will be introduced to the limitations and exceptions of Excel.
Lookup and references
- This module introduces Excel lookup functions for finding and retrieving data from tables. Students will learn how to use VLOOKUP, LOOKUP, XLOOKUP, and MATCH+INDEX. The module also compares different lookup methods and their practical limitations.
Array formula
- Students will be introduced to Excel array formulas and their applications. Students will learn how arrays work and how to apply them with other functions.
