Getting Started with Terminal

Demystify the text-based world of the command line and explore why direct text interfaces are making a comeback, alongside modern AI developer tools. In this introductory module, you’ll open the Mac Terminal, break down the core components of the interface, and execute your very first command. By comparing graphical interfaces (GUIs) with command-line interfaces (CLIs) you will build solid foundational mental models, understand command arguments, and gain the confidence needed to interface directly with your machine.

Navigating Your File System with the Command Line

Module 2 focuses on spatial awareness and movement within the command line. You will learn to answer the fundamental question, "Where am I in my computer?". From there, you will master moving between folders, creating new directories, and reading changes in your prompt to track your exact location. Through practical exercises comparing Mac Finder to Terminal, you’ll build essential habits for verifying your actions and moving around your system smoothly without ever touching a mouse.

Managing Directories and Files

Take control of your workflow by creating, inspecting, moving, and managing files entirely through text. In this module, you’ll learn essential file manipulation commands. You will also unlock productivity shortcuts like command history navigation and master best practices for file naming. By intentionally testing (and fixing) common beginner mistakes, you’ll learn why adhering to best practices are important in CLI environments, consolidating your knowledge through a hands-on project folder setup.

Expand Your Command Line Powers

Unlock self-reliance in the terminal and gain the tools to recover when things don't go as expected. In this final module, you’ll learn how to independently look up built-in documentation, customize commands with options, and reveal hidden files. Crucially, you will master terminal recovery shortcuts to stop frozen or unneeded processes. The course concludes with a hands-on Final Practice Lab, synthesizing every navigation, file management, and terminal control skill into a repeatable real-world workflow.
