AWS Data Centers support the digital services millions of people rely on every day. This foundational course introduces you to the people and roles that keep modern data centers running, including Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) and Data Center Operations Technician (DCO/T) roles. You’ll discover what people do day-to-day while exploring the systems and technologies they work with. You’ll explore power, cooling, IT infrastructure, networking, security, and safety, and discover how people, systems, and operational processes work together to support safe, secure, and reliable operations. You’ll also explore the knowledge, technical skills, workplace behaviors, and transferable capabilities associated with Engineering Operations roles. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to recognize how your own skills and strengths may connect to learning and career pathways within AWS Data Center Engineering Operations.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to data centers
    • What does it take to keep the digital world running? In this module, you will hear from people who work in modern data centers and discover how they support the services millions of people use every day. As you explore the environment, systems, and teams behind the technology, you will also begin identifying the skills, behaviors, and career pathways that can lead to a future in Engineering Operations.
  • Power systems and electrical fundamentals
    • Discover the Engineering Operations teams that keep electrical power flowing through a modern data center. You will follow the power journey from the utility supply to the IT equipment and learn what major components do along the way. You will also explore how backup systems and redundancy support reliable digital services, while recognizing the technical knowledge, workplace behaviors, and transferable skills used in this critical work.
  • Cooling systems and environmental control
    • This module introduces the Engineering Operations teams responsible for maintaining the environmental conditions needed for reliable data center operations. You’ll follow the journey of heat from IT equipment through the cooling systems that remove it, and explore the purpose of major cooling infrastructure. You will also discover how multiple systems work together to maintain safe operating conditions. Along the way, you’ll discover the responsibilities and operational context involved in supporting critical data center environments.
  • IT Infrastructure & networking basics
    • In this module, you'll get to know the Engineering Operations teams that support the core technology infrastructure of a modern data center. You will discover why these teams exist, the responsibilities they perform, and how servers, storage, networking, and monitoring systems work together to deliver the reliable digital services people use every day. You will learn how digital information gets processed, stored, transmitted, and monitored within a modern data center.
  • Security, safety & operational culture
    • This module introduces you to the operational culture that keeps modern data centers secure, safe, and reliable. You will explore how people, processes, and technology work together to protect critical infrastructure while ensuring the safety of both personnel and equipment.
  • Engineering Operations: Bringing everything together
    • In this concluding module, you’ll explore how teams monitor critical systems, carry out routine maintenance, respond when conditions change, and communicate and collaborate to support reliable data center operations. You’ll also connect what you’ve learned throughout the course to the people and career pathways that make data center operations possible. By the end of the module, you’ll have a clearer picture of how Engineering Operations brings people, systems, and processes together, and where you can continue your learning next.
