This course introduces quantitative data analysis, linking it to the scientific method and research design. What Is Quantitative Data Analysis?
- This module introduces the fundamentals of quantitative data analysis and its role in social science research. You will explore how quantitative analysis relates to the scientific method and research design, become familiar with key terminology, and learn how statistical techniques are used to identify patterns and relationships within numerical data.
Quantitative Data and Statistical Software
- This module explores the foundations of quantitative data, including the different types of data used in social science research and how to locate, store, and manage them effectively. You will also be introduced to commonly used statistical software and learn how to select appropriate tools for conducting quantitative data analysis.
Quantitative Data Analysis Techniques
- This module provides an overview of common quantitative data analysis techniques and their use in social science research. You will learn how different methods can be used to describe data, explore relationships between variables, and explain or predict social phenomena, helping you understand when and why different analytical approaches are applied.
Preparing Data for Quantitative Data Analysis
- This module introduces the essential process of preparing data for quantitative analysis. You will learn how to examine datasets, clean and organize data, and apply common variable manipulation techniques to ensure your data are accurate, manageable, and ready for effective analysis.
Quantitative Data Analysis in Action
- This module provides a practical, step-by-step introduction to quantitative data analysis using the 2020 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation dataset. You will learn how to prepare and explore data, conduct descriptive and exploratory analyses, and interpret the results of a multiple linear regression, gaining an overview of the quantitative analysis process from start to finish.
Storytelling With Quantitative Data and Analysis
- This module focuses on interpreting and communicating the results of quantitative data analysis in meaningful ways. You will learn how to explain statistical findings in clear, accessible language, distinguish between statistical and substantive significance, and use quantitative evidence to create compelling narratives about social phenomena.
