Syllabus
- Module 1 - Fundamentals of Active Learning
- Welcome to Foundations for Active Learning in STEM Courses! We are glad you are here. This course will take you through a deep dive into active learning theories, techniques, and practical applications for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Module 2 - Why Active Learning Matters in STEM
- Now, let's take a look at the unique challenges of learning STEM concepts. We will look at how active learning addresses these challenges of STEM concepts, describe the connection between active learning and STEM skills development.
- Module 3 - Active Learning Strategies for STEM Educators
- This module introduces active learning strategies specifically tailored for STEM education, focusing on Project-Based Learning (PBL), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and Cooperative Learning. These approaches engage students by promoting critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world application of concepts. Each method includes frameworks and examples to encourage participation, accountability, and sustained inquiry, helping educators create a more interactive and effective STEM classroom environment.
- Module 4 - Evidence-Based Impact of Active Learning
- Active learning techniques, such as group quizzes, peer-to-peer learning, and flipped classrooms, foster collaboration and deepen understanding in STEM courses. Techniques like polling and group work enhance engagement, teamwork, and retention of material. Group quizzes in mathematics and labs focusing on experiential learning help students gain practical, applicable skills. By emphasizing collaboration and hands-on learning, these approaches support both cognitive and social engagement, providing students with a richer, more interactive learning experience.
- Module 5 - Implementing Active Learning in Your Classroom
- In this final phase of the course, you will critically engage with active learning practices by identifying common barriers to implementation and exploring strategies to overcome them. You will analyze and critique the active learning methods demonstrated by expert STEM faculty at Johns Hopkins University, using the knowledge and frameworks developed throughout the course. As you reflect on your personal learning experiences, you will create a plan for incorporating active learning into your own STEM teaching practice. Additionally, you will explore technology tools and resources that support active learning, and share best practices and constructive feedback with your peers through a collaborative online forum.
