5G Open RAN Essentials: Architecture & Ecosystem Basics is a hands-on course designed for engineers, analysts, and telecom professionals who want to understand the building blocks and business case behind Open RAN. You’ll start by exploring what sets Open RAN apart from traditional RAN—from modular architecture to open interfaces—using simple, visual walkthroughs. As you move forward, you’ll dive into the core components of O-RAN—RU, DU, CU, and RIC—and learn how they work together to enable vendor interoperability and flexible deployments. Through real-world case studies, interactive labs, and industry-aligned design tasks, you’ll apply your learning in practical ways—from designing pilot architectures to making a strategic pitch for O-RAN adoption. By the end, you’ll be able to confidently explain how Open RAN works, why it matters, and how it’s being deployed around the world to drive innovation, cost-efficiency, and supply chain diversity.

Syllabus

  • Lesson 1: Why Open RAN Changed the Rules: Inside the 5G Architecture Revolution
    • In this foundational lesson, learners will build a working understanding of 5G Open RAN architecture and how it departs from traditional closed RAN systems. The focus is on helping learners explore the structural shift toward disaggregation, open interfaces, and vendor-agnostic network design. Through guided walkthroughs, architecture comparisons, and industry examples, learners will analyze what makes Open RAN “open,” how the O-RAN Alliance shaped global standards, and why this matters for the future of 5G deployments. By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to distinguish Open RAN principles from legacy models and explain the architectural value of openness.
  • Lesson 2: Meet the Brains and Brawn of Open RAN: RU, DU, CU, and RIC Explained
    • In this lesson, learners will gain practical insight into the four core components that power Open RAN systems: the Radio Unit (RU), Distributed Unit (DU), Central Unit (CU), and RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). The focus is on helping learners visualize how these elements interact across open interfaces and enable scalable, multi-vendor 5G networks. Using real-world examples and guided architecture breakdowns, learners will examine how functional splits work in practice, how the RIC supports AI-driven control, and how modular design supports flexibility. By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to map O-RAN components to their roles in enabling vendor interoperability and network adaptability.
  • Lesson 3: Who’s Betting on Open RAN—and Why? The Business Case Behind the Hype
    • In this lesson, learners will evaluate the business and technical motivations behind global Open RAN adoption. The focus is on understanding why telecom operators, governments, and equipment vendors are moving toward open network ecosystems—and what advantages they seek. Through use cases, policy examples, and industry partnerships, learners will explore key drivers such as cost savings, energy efficiency, deployment flexibility, and supply chain diversification. By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to articulate the strategic value of Open RAN and assess its real-world potential across different deployment scenarios.
