Surrealism continues to influence contemporary photography, offering a powerful lens through which to explore the strange, the dreamlike, and the unexpected. In this course, students will dive into the history and ongoing impact of Surrealist art, while creating their own photographs and collages that reflect their personal interpretation of this dynamic movement.
Through readings by Surrealist poets and writers, as well as discussions of key Surrealist art movements, students will develop a deeper understanding of how the Surrealist ethos has shaped both past and present creative practices. The course will encourage experimentation with unconventional techniques, challenging students to push the boundaries of traditional photography and collage.
By the end of the class, participants will walk away with a richer appreciation of Surrealism and a set of new tools to infuse their own photographic work with the strange and beautiful possibilities the movement offers.
