Sometimes the richest subject matter is right in front of you. This process-based course invites students to draw inspiration from daily life, domestic spaces, and personal experiences to develop a body of work. Through weekly assignments, writing prompts, discussion, and supportive critique, participants will explore image-making within their own environments, embracing the spontaneity and intimacy of working at home while clarifying the stories they want to tell.
During each online session, the group will share work and ideas in a safe space and engage with writing prompts to invite discussion and push projects forward. There will be a new assignment each week and each student will have time to show work and solicit feedback from the group. Students will look at other autobiographical artists and experiment with approaches such as self-portraiture, documenting family life, using objects found around the house, and working with archival images. Emphasis will be placed on letting go of perfectionism, building a daily creative practice, and using photography as a tool for reflection and self-care. By the end of the course, students will have begun or deepened a body of work rooted in personal experience.
