American Women Poets at the MET American Wing: An Online Poetry Seminar-Workshop with an In-Person Museum Visit
This 92NY online seminar-workshop with an in-person tour will take as its inspiration the 100th Anniversary of the Metropolitan Museum of Art American Wing.
The in-person tour will be led by Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A Fleischman Curator In Charge, The American Wing. We will read the couplets of Phillis Wheatley, the stanzas of Emily Dickinson, and the sonnets of both Edna St. Vincent Millay and Gwendolyn Brooks. Then, we’ll look at the visual art of their contemporaries in the American Wing: Edmonia Lewis, Harriet Hosmer, Mary Cassatt, and Mary Sully. We’ll use the correspondences among them to inspire — loosely and personally — the poetry and poetic imagery we can make for ourselves today. This class is for everyone interested in poetry and art, from beginner to accomplished. We also welcome visual artists new to poetry and poets who make visual art. Each class reserves time for participants to write or draw. Our motto? In the attempt is the success.
