This hands-on online course introduces participants to the fascinating techniques of emulsion lifts and transfers utilizing Polaroid film materials. The emulsion, which is the light-sensitive component of film, becomes removable and transferable to alternative surfaces when moistened, resulting in distinctive surface qualities, color transformations, and visual distortions unique to each piece.
Using step-by-step demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will master the techniques of lifting and transferring images manually, investigating how heat, timing, force, and substrate materials influence the final image. Throughout the course progression, students will investigate methods including sequential arrangements, layering techniques, manual alterations to the emulsion, transfers to different surfaces and materials, and intentional modifications such as separations or creases. Collaborative peer review sessions and thoughtful discussions will encourage reflection on the process itself, the properties of the materials used, and how the meaning of a photograph shifts after being disassembled and reassembled in new ways.
Students of any experience level are welcome to enroll in this course. Prior experience with photography or emulsion transfers is not required to participate.
Please be aware that only Polaroid brand film will work with this process; alternative brands like Instax are not compatible. Film types that work include Polaroid i-type, Polaroid Go, 600 color, 600 black and white, SX-70 color, and SX-70 black and white options. Students must use Polaroid cameras that are designed to accept the selected film types.
