Anthotypes & Other Organic Processes I (Live Online)

via CourseHorse

Overview

Welcome to an exciting introduction to plant-based photographic processes and techniques! This engaging course covers four distinct methods: anthotypes, chlorophyll printing, lumens, and phytograms. Participants attend weekly online demonstrations, then complete hands-on assignments at their own pace before returning for constructive critique and the following week's new technique instruction.

An online digital classroom remains available between sessions for sharing your work and asking questions with instructors and peers.

  • Anthotypes: A historical technique originating with Sir John Herschel in the nineteenth century. You will prepare an emulsion from fresh plant material, coat it onto paper, and expose your design using direct sunlight to create beautiful, naturalistic prints.
  • Chlorophyll printing: A variation of anthotype methods where images are created directly on living plant leaves. Rather than using extracted plant juices, you will place objects, stencils, or positive transparencies on leaves to capture detailed silhouettes through solar exposure.
  • Lumens: Camera-less photographic prints produced by arranging plant materials in direct contact with black and white silver gelatin paper. This method generates striking, vibrantly colored prints with unpredictable and beautiful results.
  • Phytograms: Similar to lumens but using organic, nontoxic chemistry with botanical materials arranged on film instead of paper. Once developed, your creation can be used for further printing or displayed as a completed artwork.

The final class session focuses on discussing presentation options and conservation techniques for these ephemeral artistic pieces.

Materials: Additional materials and specialized chemistry must be acquired for this course. Registered students receive a detailed materials list one week before the class begins.

Required materials and specific course requirements will be provided in more detail upon enrollment.

The course is structured around weekly sessions to ensure consistent progress and engagement with the material.

Additional course content and supplementary materials will be made available to support your learning throughout the duration of this course, with regular updates and enhancements to ensure quality and relevance.
