Overview

Free courses in the order a MERN stack developer needs them: HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the page, React for the interface, then Node.js and Express for the server, MongoDB for the data and logins to keep it safe. One language, JavaScript, from the first tag to the last API route, and every lesson runs in your browser.

Syllabus

  1. Learn HTML — Elements, links, forms and semantic markup, then selectors, the box model, flexbox, grid and responsive layouts. React writes HTML for you later, so this is the language it speaks.
  2. Learn JavaScript — Variables, functions, arrays and objects, then conditions and loops, then classes. This is the one language you use in every later step, in the browser and on the server.
  3. Learn HTML — The DOM, events, forms and validation, then practical patterns such as tabs, modals and responsive navigation. What React does for you makes sense once you have done it by hand.
  4. Learn React - Free Interactive Course — Components, JSX, props, state, events, lists and controlled forms, ending with a small social card you build step by step. React is the interface your API will serve.
  5. Learn Node.js — JavaScript outside the browser: command-line arguments, modules, reading and writing files, callbacks, promises, async and await, the event loop and events. You build a command-line notes tool.
  6. Learn Node.js — Routes, parameters, JSON, middleware, error handlers and routers on a recipe site, then a task tracker API: POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE, validation with zod, filtering, sorting, pagination and CORS.
  7. Learn Node.js — Documents and collections from an Express API: inserts, ObjectId, filters, update operators, unique indexes, aggregation and $lookup. Then who may see the data: hashed passwords, sessions, JWTs, owners and admin roles, security headers and rate limiting.
  8. Learn Linux and the Command Line — Files, permissions, pipes and scripts in a real terminal, then commits, branches, merges and remotes. Every MERN project lives in a Git repository and runs on a command line.
