Artificial intelligence, particularly with the introduction of generative AI, is fundamentally impacting a huge spectrum of human experience. This ranges from the vast majority of jobs and professions to education, healthcare, media and entertainment, and much more. These rapid advances have been accompanied by a huge array of fundamental and greatly impactful ethical challenges, including bias and inaccuracy in AI systems, where AI systems should and shouldn’t replace humans, and potential benefits and harms from various types of autonomous systems, and existential issues including the future of human work and the possibility of AI systems whose intelligence exceeds that of humans. This course provides students with a broad exposure to the ethical issues arising from AI, along with the experience and ethical tools to analyze them. It is intended to help students recognize and deal with these issues in their professional careers and their lives. It is based on a combination of current media articles and recent research papers, and is designed so that it can be kept current by refreshing the references it is based on. This course can be taken for academic credit as part of CU Boulder’s Masters of Science in Computer Science (MS-CS) and the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MS-AI) degrees offered on the Coursera platform. This fully accredited graduate degree offer targeted courses, short 8-week sessions, and pay-as-you-go tuition. Admission is based on performance in three preliminary courses, not academic history. CU degrees on Coursera are ideal for recent graduates or working professionals. Artificial intelligence has the potential to reshape many aspects of society, including what it means to work, create, learn, and connect. This course prepares learners to critically analyze the ethical and societal implications of these changes, anticipate possible futures, and make thoughtful decisions about the development, use, and governance of AI systems. Topics include labor and automation, including historical perspectives on how technology reshapes industries and what AI might mean for the future of work; how AI could transform learning and education, and what risks those transformations might pose; the impact of AI on human creativity and notions of authorship; and companionship and social connection in the context of AI systems such as chatbots. Learners will also engage with speculative and practical approaches to AI ethics, exploring possible future trajectories, identifying risks and tradeoffs, and considering how human choices shape the paths we take. As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into society, questions about how it should be governed have become both more important and more challenging. This course examines how societies translate ethical concerns about AI into policies, laws, standards, and other forms of governance. Learners will explore the complex governance ecosystem surrounding AI, from legal frameworks to organizational policies to social norms. This course covers broad approaches to AI governance around the world, comparing major frameworks such as those emerging in the EU and the US, and including topics such as data privacy and intellectual property, as well as emerging efforts to address societal concerns including discrimination, labor, and environmental impacts. Learners will also consider the role of governance beyond law, including how market forces, architecture, and norms can steer the direction of technology. Through analyzing research and policy documents as well as current events, students will learn to identify emerging governance issues, critique proposed solutions, and design policy strategies for responsible AI development.
