Bring your real-time visual effects to life by mastering Unreal Engine’s Cascade particle system. In this course, you will learn how to design, construct, implement, and integrate dynamic particle effects using Cascade’s modular workflow. Starting with the editor interface and core particle behaviors, you will build foundational effects while learning to control properties such as color, size, lifetime, velocity, and activation. As you progress, you will create sprite and GPU-based emitters, configure curve-driven behaviors, and use vector fields and mesh emitters to produce more complex, high-performance effects. You will also explore advanced emitter types, including beam, ribbon, and anim trail emitters, integrating them with skeletal meshes, materials, and dynamic trail properties to create expressive visual effects for real-time environments. Designed for learners who want to develop practical Unreal Engine visual effects skills, this course emphasizes hands-on creation through progressively advanced projects. By the end of the course, you will be able to build, customize, optimize, and integrate particle systems that balance artistic intent with technical performance, enabling you to create compelling effects for games, cinematics, and interactive media.

Syllabus

  • Getting Started with Cascade Editor
    • This module introduces learners to Unreal Engine’s Cascade particle system editor, covering the foundational tools and principles for designing dynamic particle effects. Through hands-on exploration of emitters, modules, and particle behaviors, learners will gain the skills to control attributes such as color, size, lifetime, velocity, and activation. By the end of this module, participants will be able to build and customize particle systems such as explosions, environmental effects, and game-ready visual components using Cascade’s modular interface.
  • Sprite and GPU Emitters
    • This module explores advanced particle systems in Unreal Engine’s Cascade, focusing on sprite-based and GPU-based emitters. Learners will gain hands-on experience creating sprite emitters, configuring dynamic properties like lifetime, velocity, and size, and using curve editors to control value transitions. The module further delves into GPU sprite emitters, color manipulation, vector fields, and mesh-based particles. By the end of the module, learners will be equipped to build complex, high-performance particle effects that integrate physics, visuals, and directional influence.
  • Advanced Emitters and Trails
    • This module explores specialized particle emitter types in Unreal Engine’s Cascade system, focusing on beam, ribbon, and anim trail emitters. Learners will gain hands-on experience building beam effects for real-time connections, designing ribbon-based trails for continuous particle paths, and integrating anim trail emitters with skeletal mesh animations. Additionally, the module covers visual enhancements like tangents, trail color transitions, and dynamic material adjustments, empowering learners to create expressive and physically reactive visual trails in a game environment.
