This lecture titled "Expressive Curves" is presented by Sergey Fomin from the University of Michigan as part of the Special Year Seminar II at the Institute for Advanced Study. Explore the concept of expressive curves in algebraic geometry, defined as real plane algebraic curves whose defining polynomials have the minimum possible number of critical points allowed by their topology. Learn about necessary and sufficient criteria for expressivity (with mild technical conditions), discover various constructions that generate expressive curves, and understand their relationship to the combinatorics of plabic graphs, quivers, and links. The presentation covers joint research work with Eugenii Shustin and is scheduled for March 27, 2025, at 11:00am in Simonyi 101, lasting approximately 77 minutes.
