Women’s writing as a field of study marks the area of literatures written by women as well as category of literature dealing with writings by women about their varied experiences in society based on their gender. Learners should be sensitive about the common lived experiences of womenacross cultures, while at the same time being appreciative of the heterogeneities marking sexual identities across varied geographical, cultural and socio-economic locations. This course aims at introducing the learners to feminist writings across continents, so that they may empathise with thehistorical and socio-cultural contexts influencing women and their involvement in literary arts. This course is designed to familiarise the learners withwomen-authored texts which critique the social norms and stereotypes which are responsible for the marginalised status of women, in all cultures.
This Course aims to:
1.End-Term Examination: Weightage: 70% of the final result
Minimum Passing Criteria: 40%
2. Internal Assessment: Weightage: 30% of the final result
Minimum Passing Criteria: 40%
3. Calculation of IA Marks: Out of all graded weekly assessments/assignments, the top 50% of assignments shall be considered for the calculation of the final Internal Assessment marks.
All students who obtain 40% marks in the internal assessment and 40% marks in the end-term proctored exam separately will be eligible for the SWAYAM Credit Certificate.

This Course aims to:
- introduce the learners to the women’s writing as a significant genre of literary studies;
- familiarize the them with the varied historical and socio-cultural contexts that contexts govern women’s involvement in literary arts;
- enable the learners to understand the varied representations of women in art and literature;
- enable them to understand the real and material conditions in which women live as against those in which men live;
- equip them with the analytical skill required to interpret literary texts through the lenses of gender;
- enable the learners to examine the complexities governing the production, consumption and reception of women’s writing
- become aware about the basic differences between sex and gender;
- be able to understand that feminism is a theoretical approach employed to read literary texts as well as cultural practices;
- understand the various strands of feminisms, born out of cultural, geographical, political, economic and social distinctions as well as ideological differences;
- to enable the learners to analyse the multiplicities in the feminist position as represented in women’s writings;
- be able to contextualise women’s writings against specific socio-political and cultural milieu
- be able to appreciate women’s writings as a distinctive tradition as against writings by male authors; and;
- equip themselves with the distinctive nature of women’s writing through exploration of terms like “androgyny”, “gynocriticism”, “ecriture feminine”
