Explore the fundamental concepts of brain criticality in this 82-minute lecture from the ICTP-SAIFR School on biological physics across scales. Learn from Mauro Copelli of the Federal University of Pernambuco as he introduces the theoretical framework of critical phenomena in neural systems, examining how the brain operates at the edge of chaos between order and disorder. Discover the mathematical foundations underlying neural criticality, including phase transitions in neural networks, avalanche dynamics, and the emergence of scale-free behavior in brain activity. Understand how critical dynamics optimize information processing, enhance computational capacity, and facilitate efficient signal transmission across neural networks. Examine experimental evidence supporting the criticality hypothesis in various brain regions and scales, from individual neurons to large-scale cortical networks. Investigate the relationship between critical dynamics and cognitive functions, learning processes, and neurological disorders. This foundational class provides essential background for understanding how statistical physics principles apply to complex biological systems, particularly in the context of neural computation and brain function.

It’s a great course , the way the instructor taught was very interesting. The explanations alongside the historical examples really helped me visualize everything crystal clear. Thanks for such courses, I amused to observe the power of this particular website to learn so much without any cost associated.

I have just completed this course about the brain and its basic functions. I found it very interesting and useful because it explained the fundamentals of how the brain works in a simple and clear way. The instructor was friendly, and the explanations were easy to follow. However, I think the course could include more detailed information, especially about the biological aspects of the brain. Overall, I really enjoyed it because I believe the brain is the most important organ in the human body, and learning more about it helps us better understand ourselves and how we think, learn, and make decisions.
