This lecture provides an introduction to lattice gauge theories, exploring these higher-dimensional analogs of well-known physics models like the Ising model, XY model, and clock model. Discover how these theories serve as discretizations of the Yang-Mills model, which is fundamental to the standard model in physics. Throughout this one-hour presentation from the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, learn about the basic properties of lattice gauge theories and understand how they compare to and differ from the behavior of the Ising model. This session represents the first part of a mini-course dedicated to exploring these important theoretical frameworks in mathematical physics.
