This seminar from GERAD Research Center explores an infinite-horizon optimal control paradigm for modeling global energy transition to zero-net emissions, focusing on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and electric fuel (E-Fuel) technologies. Discover how infinite-horizon optimal trajectories for convex systems are characterized by global asymptotic stability, with an attractor defined as an extreme steady state. Learn about the "turnpike" concept as a sustainable future with zero net emissions, obtained by solving an "implicit" mathematical programming problem that incorporates robustness to account for uncertainties in CO2 storage availability. The presentation includes a complete mathematical description of the infinite-horizon optimal control formulation, complemented by numerical illustrations that align with Paris Agreement goals. Presented by Alain Haurie, Director and co-founder of ORDECSYS, Switzerland, on May 29, 2025.
