This open online course is designed for both Chinese and international students who have a basic command of either English or Chinese. Moving beyond traditional language instruction, the course takes a comparative approach to systematically examine the differences between Chinese and English—at the levels of pronunciation, vocabulary, syntax, pragmatics and culture—and further explores the cultural logic and thinking patterns embedded in each language.
Adopting a “comparison-driven, two-way output” model, Chinese students learn to explain Chinese cultural practices in English, while international students use Chinese to interpret communication norms in English-speaking societies. Through scenario-based simulations, case discussions, and cross-cultural interviews, learners develop the ability to recognize misunderstandings, reduce cultural friction, and cultivate empathy in real-world interactions.
Whether you are an English speaker seeking to improve cross-cultural communication skills, or an international student learning Chinese and hoping to understand how Chinese people think, this course offers a mirror of culture—help you see your own language and culture more clearly, while opening your mind to another.
