ABOUT THE COURSE:
The course “Ventilation and Climate Control” focuses on the principles and practices of controlling air quality, heat, and environmental conditions in underground mines. It covers psychrometry, human thermoregulation, heat, dust, gases in mines, air cooling systems, airflow mechanics, mine fans, and ventilation simulation and planning. Emphasis is placed on mine safety, statutory compliance, and energy-efficient ventilation design. The course combines fundamental theory with practical examples relevant to modern underground mining operations and emerging concepts such as ventilation optimisation and ventilation-on-demand.
INTENDED AUDIENCE: UG Students
PREREQUISITES: Students are expected to have completed basic undergraduate-level courses in Engineering Mathematics and introductory Mining Engineering subjects. Prior exposure to Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Underground Mining Methods will be advantageous; however, it is not compulsory, as the necessary fundamentals will be introduced within the course.
INDUSTRY SUPPORT: The course “Ventilation and Climate Control” will be recognised and valued by major coal and metal mining companies such as Coal India Limited (CIL), SCCL, NMDC, Tata Steel, Hindustan Zinc, Adani Mining, and JSW Mining, as well as mine planning and consultancy organisations like CMPDI, MECON, and SRK Consulting. It is also relevant to equipment manufacturers such as Howden, ABB, Sandvik, and Epiroc, and to regulatory and research bodies including DGMS and CIMFR, due to its strong alignment with statutory requirements and industry practices
