ABOUT THE COURSE:Ethics is the philosophical study of moral phenomena also called moral philosophy, it investigates normative questions about what people ought to do or which behaviour is morely right .Its main branches include normative ethics , applied ethics and metaethics . Normative ethics aims to find general principle to govern how people should act influential normative theories are concequentialism ,deontology ,and virtue ethics . Applied ethics , examine concreate ethical problems in real life situation . Metaethics explore the underlying assumption and concept of ethics it asks whether there are objective moral facts ,how moral knowledge is possible , and how moral judgments motivate people . Ethics is closely connected to value theory .INTENDED AUDIENCE: Undergraduate and Post Graduate studentsPREREQUISITES: 10+2 in any streamINDUSTRY SUPPORT: Industry wants business ethics, Medical Ethics

Week 1: Nature and scope of ethics, Definition of ethics, Normative ethics and meta ethics, The nature of ethics , Is ethics a science?, Ethics is not a natural or positive science, The province or scope of ethics, The method of ethics, Ethics and sociology, Ethics and politics, Ethics and meta ethics. The psychological basis of ethics : Moral and non-moral action, Voluntary action, Desire, Appetite, Relation of desire to self and character.
Week 2:Moral concepts: Right, Wrong, Good and Highest good, Duty, Virtue, Subjective and Objective rightness Moral judgement: The nature of moral judgement, The subject and object of moral judgement. Hedonism, Ethical and psychological hedonism, Egoism and altruism
Week 3:Utilitarianism: General introduction, Act- Utilitarianism, Rule utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham- Hedonistic calculus: gross or quantitative utilitarianism, Hedonistic calculus, J.S. MILL: Refined or qualitative utilitarianism, Henry Sidgwick Self perfectionism: The concept of man. Green`s theory of common Good, Bradley's, My station and its duty
Week 4:Intuitionism: General introduction, Rational intitutionism: Cudwordh, Samuelclarke, The aesthetic sense theory- Shaftsbury, Hutcheson, Butler`s Conscience theory Neo-instituionism- G.E. Moore, Prechard, Rouse
Week 5:Kant`s Categorical Imperative And Its Formulation. The Doctrines of Good Will. Holy will, The Doctrines Of Duty`s For Dutysake. Formalism, Regolism and aseticism of kant. The doctrine of man as an end in himself, the postulate of morality
Week 6:Theory of punishment: Retributive, Deterrent, Reformative theory Freedom of will and moral responsibility: Meaning of freedom of will -the ability to perform action, knowledge and purpose choose between different possibility of action, determinism, indeterminism, fatalism, relation between individual and society :Altruism, Egoism, Univesalism
Week 7:Meta Ethics: Problem of metaethics, naturalism, subjectivism objectivism, emotivism- A.J.Ayear, carnap, C.L.Stevension, prescriptivism-R.N. Hair, Navel Smith
Week 8:Development of Indian ethics. The Ethical Philosophy Of Bhagvadgita: The need and norms of human action. The doctrine of Niskama karma. The ideals oif Sthitaprajna and Lokasangraha. Concept of purusarth (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha),Rit and Rina
