Syllabus

  • Designing a Sample Application
    • This module guides learners through the process of designing a scalable and efficient database application, from understanding business requirements to building and normalizing entity-relationship models. Learners will gain practical skills in aligning database structures with organizational needs and ensuring data integrity through normalization.
  • Building an Application
    • This module guides learners through the process of transforming an entity-relationship model into a functional relational database, with a focus on designing user-friendly interfaces and ensuring effective connectivity. Learners will explore the steps required to move from conceptual design to practical application, including form mock-ups, stakeholder approval, and building application components. By the end, participants will understand how to create accessible and robust database applications.
  • Understanding SQL's Procedural Capabilities
    • This module introduces learners to procedural extensions in SQL, including variable assignment, control flow structures like loops, and the use of triggers for automating database actions. By exploring SQL/PSM, students will gain practical skills for enhancing database functionality and automation.
  • Connecting SQL to a Remote Database
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of client/server communication in SQL environments, focusing on how applications connect to remote databases using ODBC. Learners will explore the roles of drivers, the driver manager, and the process that occurs when an application makes a database request. By the end, you will understand the key components and workflow involved in remote database connectivity.
  • Using XML with SQL
    • This module introduces the integration of XML with SQL, focusing on schema mapping, handling attributes, and converting various SQL data types to XML. Learners will explore key SQL functions for operating on XML data and understand practical approaches for data exchange between systems. By the end, you'll be able to map and manipulate data across both formats for enhanced interoperability.
  • Storing XML Data in SQL Tables
    • This module introduces the principles and practices for storing and manipulating XML data within SQL databases. Learners will explore how major database systems like Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server handle XML data, including methods for inserting, updating, and mapping XML structures to relational tables. The module also covers the concept of mapping schemas to bridge the structural differences between XML and SQL.
  • Retrieving Data from XML Documents
    • This module introduces techniques for converting SQL data to XML, explores the fundamentals of XQuery syntax, and examines how FLWOR expressions enable powerful XML data retrieval. Learners will also compare XQuery and SQL data type mappings to improve data integration and querying efficiency.
  • Using JSON with SQL
    • This module introduces the integration of JSON data with SQL, focusing on how to store, query, and construct JSON objects within relational databases. Learners will explore SQL/JSON data models, path language, and specialized functions for handling semi-structured data efficiently.
  • Exploring Property Graph Queries
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of property graph databases and demonstrates how to query them using SQL/PGQ. Learners will explore the structure of nodes and edges, understand how to represent complex relationships, and practice constructing SQL queries for property graphs.
  • Tuning the Database
    • This module guides learners through the principles of optimizing database performance by examining physical design choices, analyzing workloads, and selecting appropriate indexes. Learners will discover how to assess and refine indexing strategies based on real-world usage data to ensure efficient query processing.
  • Tuning the Environment
    • This module guides learners through essential strategies for enhancing system reliability and performance, focusing on data recovery, hardware optimization, and operating system tuning. Participants will explore practical techniques for managing failures, optimizing disk operations, and configuring system resources to ensure robust database environments.
  • Finding and Eliminating Performance Bottlenecks
    • This module guides learners through the process of diagnosing and resolving database performance issues by examining common bottlenecks such as indexing, communication, and hardware limitations. Learners will gain practical strategies for optimizing queries, managing system resources, and tracking down problematic queries to enhance overall database efficiency.
