This course introduces database concepts as related to the design of online data systems. This course will focus on the design and use of the MySQL relational database and Structured Query Language (SQL). Problems involving structuring, creating, maintaining, and accessing multi-user databases are presented and solutions developed. Comparisons of several commercially available database management systems are made including NoSQL systems.

Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to Databases

Module 1 includes lectures on database design, database evolution, and the power of database management systems. After reading Chapter 1 and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises. Use the feedback from the Practice Exercises to complete the Module 1 Application and Module 1 Quiz (only 1 attempt each).

Module 2: Data Models and Database Design

Module 2 includes lectures on data modeling, the evolution of data models, and data model abstraction. After setting up LucidChart, reading Chapters 2 and 9, and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises. Use the feedback from the Practice Exercises to complete the Module 2 Application and Module 2 Quiz (only 1 attempt each).

Module 3: The Relational Database Model

Module 3 includes lectures on relational database models, operators, data dictionary and system catalog, entities and relationships, and data redundancy. After reading Chapter 3 and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises. Use the feedback from the Practice Exercises to complete the Module 3 Application and Module 3 Quiz (only 1 attempt each).

Module 4: Entity Relationship Modeling

Module 4 includes lectures on entity relationships, entity participation and degrees in relationships, developing an Entity Relationship (ER) diagram, and a Module Review. After reading Chapter 4 and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises. Use the feedback from the Practice Exercises to complete the Module 4 Applications (2 attempts each) and Module 4 Quiz (only 1 attempt).

Module 5: Advanced Entity Relationship Modeling

Module 5 includes lectures on Extended Entity Relationship (EER) model constructions, good primary keys, flexible solutions, and a Module Review. After reading Chapter 5 and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises. Use the feedback from the Practice Exercises to complete the Module 5 Application and Module 5 Quiz (only 1 attempt each).

Module 6: Database Normalization

Module 6 includes lectures on normalization, normal forms and transformations, applying normalization roles to tables, denormalization, and ERD data-modeling checklists. After reading Chapter 6 and watching the lectures, check your understanding with the Practice Exercises.
