Build a strong foundation in the business knowledge HR professionals need to be effective, strategic partners in any organization. In this course, you will explore how businesses are structured, how organizational culture is developed, and how HR supports compliance, governance, and data-driven decision-making. Whether you are new to a formal HR role or looking to strengthen your business acumen, this course gives you the context to understand how HR fits into the bigger picture. By the end of this course, you will be able to: Identify common business structures, organizational models, and stakeholder relationships that define HR's role in the business environment Explain how mission, vision, values, and culture guide HR strategy, risk management, and organizational change Describe how corporate governance, federal employment laws, and regulatory agencies shape HR compliance practices Describe how HRIS platforms, record-keeping, data analysis, and security practices support compliant HR data management

Syllabus

  • Foundations of Organizational Structure
    • In your first module, you will identify common business entity types, explain organizational structure models and span of control, and examine how stakeholders and cross-functional collaboration support effective decision-making. You will also explain how communication methods should be adapted for different work environments.
  • Organizational Culture, Risk, and Change
    • In this module, you will explain how mission, vision, and values support organizational alignment, describe how inclusive workplace cultures are reinforced through HR practices, and identify methods used to assess and mitigate organizational risk. You will also describe common change management models and HR’s role in supporting organizational transitions.
  • Governance and Regulatory Compliance
    • In this module, you will explain how corporate governance structures support accountability and strategic alignment, describe common HR and business metrics used to evaluate performance, and identify major federal employment laws and agencies that shape and enforce HR practices.
  • Managing HR Information and Data Security
    • In this module, you will describe the role of HRIS in managing employee data, identify record-keeping requirements that support legal compliance, analyze HR data to support reporting and decision-making, and explain best practices for protecting sensitive employee information.
